Exercise outdoors

We were designed to live in a three-dimensional world, yet we live a majority of it in one dimension.  Sitting (or sedentary) in what is termed as ‘flexion malposition’, more commonly known as slouching.  We move and walk on man-made substances, with our feet enclosed in man-made shoes.  We think that we are ‘in contact’, yet we have lost contact.

Exercise is often done in one dimension, held captive within a gymnasium.  Lined up on a treadmill, a stepper or bike; plugged in to the news outlets or TV channels on big screens, or You Tube on smaller personal devices.  Young men standing in front of huge mirrors, lifting weights, yet only truly exercising the ‘mirror muscles’.

When was the last time you exercised outdoors?

Swimming, or even better swimming in the ocean or an ocean pool; running or walking on a bush track or trail; riding a bike either on road or off; surfing; hiking; skiing or cross-country skiing.  Or functional training such as Cross fit (yes, it is indoors, but wait!). Each of these activities allows our body to exercise in three dimensions.  Exercising outdoors, in nature, is multi-faceted.  We can move forward and laterally; up and across.  We condition our body to engage in strength, resistance, core stability, proprioception and balance at the same time as propelling ourselves forwards allowing us to adapt and strengthen our body in its natural state.  Preparing us for everyday movement. Preparing us for everyday movement, and even aiding in back pain treatment

It also allows us to connect with the earth.  Warm up or cool down whilst being in physical contact with the earth.  Sit and meditate on the beach or on a rock.  Swim in the ocean, or a lake.  Research into earthing (also known as grounding) has shown that bodily contact with the Earth’s natural electric charge stabilizes our physiology at the deepest level.  This connectivity has shown to help reduce inflammation, pain, and stress, improving blood flow, energy, and deep sleep, and generating a greater well-being.

Get outside, and recharge and revitalise yourself.  Remember to kick off your shoes and enjoy the wonder that this planet has provided for us. For a comprehensive approach to wellbeing, consider consulting a chiropractor to understand how outdoor exercise can be integrated into a holistic health plan.
